Spirit to Spirit
“God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.” –St. John 4:24
I wanted to write about this verse, but initially, I was stumped. Jesus had said it all. Then the question came to me, “What is a spirit?” …so I looked it up.
One definition of the word spirit is: ‘the nonphysical part of a person that is the seat of emotions and character, the soul.’ That’s beautiful right?
After reading the definition, it reminded me of why we should come in gladness when we worship God; something that was revealed to me a while back that I had forgotten from earlier studies. I’ll try to share it with you now as close to what I remember.
Which is this: Regardless of how we feel physically or what type of situation we might temporarily find ourselves in– the true nature of our being is “GOOD”…because God made us that way. In His image. In His likeness. So, when we worship Him, we have to put aside everything else during that time and get like Him to truly worship him. Nothing else matters during that time because you are in the midst of Holiness… your ‘spirit’ –the best that you are, with all of your goodness, power and potential –is with God-Spirit. And that, is a wonderful and awesome thing. Even though you may want to feel unworthy, the truth is that you are– because God made you that way. He sees the best in you always because He sees the original you that He created. And so, from now on when we ‘worship’ God, remember that. Start seeing yourself as he sees you; so that the spirit-man he created can join Him in spirit and in truth.
There are a few other things that came to mind I’d like you to consider as well.
- God comes to visit you. You know, like he did Adam in the Garden in the cool of the evening. Or, like he did Cain when he asked him where his brother was. Or like Jesus came to Peter when he went back to fishing. He even says in Revelation “I stand at the door and knock; if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him and will sup with him, and he with me.” –Revelation 3:20.
- When referring to the term ‘man‘, it is not the physical gender, it’s the spiritual gender… reflecting or symbolizing ‘strength’ as in one’s emotions and character. Thus, everyone has a spirit-man even though you might be a male or female. Interesting right? Male and Female …Man and Woman… (At least that’s how it was revealed to me).
- It is all about you. It’s personal. It’s your life. It’s about your personal relationship with God-Spirit you serve. He wants you to be a reflection of everything Good that He is; and wants you to spread that goodness and good news all around the world, with everyone you meet–through your life and your testimony. Amen?
